“The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking complex, overwhelming tasks into small, manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.” ~ Mark Twain
Like Mark Twain said, there is a process to getting started. Today’s blog is part of a week-long @ OrganizedBurley is focusing on to prep for Father’s Day.
4-Steps to Start Organizing Your Garage:
- PREPARE — Before you start, call a local charity organization and schedule an appointment for them to come with a truck and pick up your larger donations. Many organizations schedule a week or more in advance, so get this scheduled first. Next, be sure you have a number of big bins or boxes for sorting. Line them up in the driveway, since everything should come OUT of the garage to be categorized.
- SORT and PURGE — Go through all of your items, one piece at a time, removing items to be trashed or donated, and organizing the rest of your stuff into the bin categories. Categories will vary depending on your lifestyle, but might include sports, gardening, tools, car maintenance, painting, pet, grilling, beach or pool, and so on. Empty the garage completely, right down to the bare walls, floor, and fixtures.
- CLEAN — Once the garage is empty, it’s time to sweep, use a leaf blower, or hose down the floor, depending on how dirty your garage is. During this step, if you have a problem with spiders or ants, you can hire someone (or DIY) to spray the perimeter of your garage with a natural pesticide. Once you return everything to the garage try to keep it all OFF the floor. Flooding happens, and spiders like to hide behind stuff and so does dust!
- FINISH — Now place all of your donations together just inside the garage door, so you’ll be ready when the charity truck comes, and CONGRATULATE yourself on a job well done!
